8

Hell, Michigan

Though the townspeople of Hell have been calling it that since the early 1800s, it officially became Hell in 1849. Some say that the strange name came about when German travelers visited and declared that the day was bright, as in English the German word for “bright” sounded like “hell” to the locals. Others say that founder George Reeves, when asked what the town should be called, said: “You can name it Hell for all I care!”
