What Cheer, Iowa

What Cheer, Iowa was once Petersburg, Iowa but then the Post Office got involved and, somehow, rejected founder Peter Britton’s name. “What Cheer” was suggested as a replacement. The name was officially changed in 1879 and most agree that the odd name came from an old English greeting, “what cheer with you?” even though contemporary townsfolk pronounce it more like “wot-cheer” and less like two words.
