20 wild animals to steer clear of during mating season

Ah, love. Surely animals express it even more tenderly than humans. Well, about that. It turns out the mating rituals of North American animals are often noisy, gross, and violent. Animals need to get their genes out into the world by whatever means necessary, and it’s often not something we humans want to be around for. So, if possible, here are some animals you should try to avoid during mating season.

Banana Slug

The award for most intense mating ritual might just go to the humble banana slug. For one thing, banana slugs are usually around 6 to 8 inches long, and their penises are just as long as their bodies. For another, these massive organs emerge from the slugs’ heads. Slugs are hermaphroditic, so all banana slugs have these massive penises, and often, after mating, their partner will chew the appendage off in order to keep them from mating with another slug. Delightful!
