15 astonishing facts about the great lakes

Lake Superior is really big, part one

Lake Superior is pretty aptly named, because it is very, very big. How big? If you’re measuring by surface area, it is the world’s largest freshwater lake (31,700 sq. mi.). If you’re measuring by volume, it is the third-largest freshwater lake in the world (roughly 3 quadrillion gallons) behind Lake Baikal (Siberia) and Lake Tangayika (Tanzania).
