15 astonishing facts about the great lakes

The Great Lakes hold a lot of fresh water

The five Great Lakes, Superior, Erie, Ontario, Huron, and Michigan, hold 6 quadrillion gallons of water. This accounts for one fifth of the freshwater surface area on the planet. The total area of the five lakes is just over 95,000 sq. mi., which is roughly the size of the state of Texas, itself among the largest American states.
